Almond oil has been used for centuries due to the amazing benefits packed into this sweet little nut. Well, it’s not actually a nut, it’s a drupe, and is the ancestor to many stoned fruits such as prunes, apricots and peaches.
The almond tree is a species native to the Mediterranean, where it was first domesticated. There are two types of almonds; bitter (coming from wild almond trees) and sweet (coming from the domesticated variety). Bitter almonds are not edible but are sometimes used in creating essential oils for fragrance. Sweet almonds are what are generally familiar with. They are safe for consumption and provide for an ever increasing number of culinary and cosmetics uses.
It is from the sweet almond that we get almond oil, which contains higher levels of the beneficial oils without the toxicity of the bitter almond. Almond oil is a light yellow oil with a light texture and a very mild nutty aroma. It is mild and hypoallergenic making it one of the safest oils to use, even on sensitive skin. Almond oil is cold pressed, meaning that the almonds are pressed without the use of heat to extract the oil. This extraction method helps to retain the nutrients and other goodness of the almond intact.
Almond oil is amazing for skin on so many levels. It is an excellent emollient, (moisturizer, skin softener) and has a light texture making it less greasy than other oils. This allows it to be absorbed readily by skin, making it great for use in or after the shower. Almond oil is packed with skin loving nutrients such as Vitamins A and D and antioxidant powerhouse, Vitamin E.
We use almond oil in nearly all of our products due to its amazing skin benefits. And we’ve only covered a few! The benefits of this amazing oil are endless.
